The UN was founded after the end of World War II by the victorious allied powers with the hope that it would act to prevent and intervene in conflicts between nations and make future wars impossible or limited. The organization's structure still reflects in some ways the circumstances of its founding, which has led to calls for reform. The five permanent members of the UN Security Council, with veto power, are the five main victors of World War II or their successors: People's Republic of China (which replaced the Republic of China), France, Russia (which replaced the Soviet Union), the United Kingdom, and the United States.

I was gonna answer this question in my own words, but I don't need to. All but one of your answerer's explained it beautifully.

One idiot seemed to think the UN was after world rule like some dictator ... the UN is a democracy of represented nations ; and I hope some day democratic fairness will represent all people on our planet.
And stop starvation, poverty , brutality , greed, and stupid hate!

Public reason - to prevent another world war in the future.
Private reason - to eliminate national sovereignty - transfer political power from each country and consolidate it into the UN.

To have an institution from all the nations who instead of going for war could sit and discus the world problems.
and not only the countries how have more power diced about the eshoes, but all of the nations do.
