I guess its a matter on opinion, do remember one thing, that while "straight people say gay marriage will ruin the institution and then get divorced all the time?" often the people who say that are NOT necessary the people who get divorced all the time. And even if its the same people, the way you are putting it equates to
1. parents tell us that lying is wrong
2. parents lie when their boss calls our home, tell us to tell their boss they are not at home
--> therefore why do parents tell us that lying is wrong when they lie themselves.
a. firstly the second happening doesn't equate to the first being wrong (morally) itself
b. however with regards to gay/lesbian marriages, whatever our stand is, remember that we are part of society, and society's legislations are formed based on a collective opinion, over time that changes due to change in collective opinion, but until that change, we just gotta live with it. Much like woman's sufferage, it took quite awhile before it became accepted.
Be careful however of two other points.
a. Just because something we feel is correct may not be correct,
--> think of paedophiles who want child-intercourse permitted
b. Just because something society feels is correct may not be correct.
--> think of the dark ages, where people were regarded as witches / warlocks just because of birth deformities
At the end of the, we are all entitled to our opinions, but we have to be understand that as part of our society, we have a set of legislations we have to live with. While we can push for our believes, be prepared that society might take time to accept, and even if they accept it might not be right.

IF there were no great tax advantages, why would you want to do somethign like that? Are you so anxious to loose half of what you own in a break up? RElationships of all kinds come and go. I think that as it stands, we have it good...no one can pressure us into doing something we don't feel is wise. Straight people say a lot of very stupid things about Gays...why should the concept of marriage be any different? It certainly has nothing to do with "family values," for when the going gets rough, they screw the family and bail. They grasp at straws for reasons to deny minorities of rights...all rights, not just this one...they have little to feel superior about, this is one last shred they deem as valuable, yet they treat the marriage as if they were going steady. Trust me, Gays have much more sound relationships. Why would you trade what we have for such a non-viable situation? Straights prove daily that marriage doesn't work.

It's not straight people it's Christians. In Christian society marriage is largely seen as a transfer of property, the woman, from one owner, her father, to a knew owner, her husband, hence the act of "giving the Bride away". It is also considered a Sacrament, something having the direct blessing of God, hence the line "What God has joined together let no man put assunder." That is why many Christian churches ban divorce. Same sex marriage, by their standards is unacceptable for two reasons: Men can't marry men because for them to lie together is an abomination; women can't marry women because, being property, neither of them can own property. In countries like Canada, where Christian bigotry does not have legislative and judicial support, same sex marriage is a fact of life. The fact that hetero marriages aren't working, and haven't for decades, doesn't, to these kinds of people, matter. They have carved in stone that the word "Marriage" must refer to the fundamentalist Christian ideal, and nothing will, or can, ever change their minds. As to why the institution is failing, I believe it's because women no longer feel so dependent on men to take care of them. If a woman is no more than a divorce away from welfare she'll put up with a lot, if only for her children's sake. These days, because she knows she has a reasonable chance of making it on her own, there is no longer a strong motivation to put in the effort to make a marriage work, especially if the man, as so many do, expects her to be the only one making compromises. It takes ongoing effort by both parties to make a marriage, or any relationship, work, it only takes one to ruin it.

I think it is feared by some because it is a big change to the current mainstream value system. But consider that for some time, the mainstream thought it was perfectly moral to own slaves.
There are a ton of injustices that we impose on gay couples. I got to talking to some activists recently at an event and I got to thinking about how unfair it is that in conservative states gay couples can’t share family medical benefits, don’t have family rights to visit, etc if your one is in the hospital, and old people get separated after a lifetime together if they move to a nursing home, since they are not spouses.
And not that it directly relates to marriage, but I worked for a child welfare agency, and I have seen children linger in foster care b/c gay adoption was illegal in that state. I mean, really- even to the most anti-gay-rights person out there- are you telling me that allowing a loving family to care for these kids is worse than making them grow up without parents???
People need to get their head out of the sand!

Totally agree on the "****** institution of marriage".
Homophobes would say anything to prevent gay people from having the same rights they do.

because people are stupid. period.
first off, people say things against gay marriage is because they're blind to reality. they say things and gives fallacy reasons on gay marriage and do exactly what they said about gay marriage. Plus heterosexual marriage couples pretty much is screwed up. how many happy famil are sitting in their backyard with a BBQ picnic and a happy chattery? None. all there is is domestic abuse, rape, molestation, divorce settlements, murder, abandonment, and so forth. it's an ugly world and the politics and religious people turns blind eye to the truth and blames everything that has nothing to do with anything.

I completely agree w/you. I'm not gay...but I believe that marriage should be something that is done between two people who love eachother and want to be devoted to one another. Regardless of gender. It's pretty hypocritical that people say it'll ruin the "sanctity" of marriage, when like you said...they all end up divorcing anyway, not to mention those who commit adultury. It's silly, we should have the freedom to marry who ever we choose. :)

So, I've been married to the same woman for 20 years. I'm never planning on divorce as I believe that is morally wrong for me....
Is it okay for me to say that gay marriage will devastate the institution of marriage?
I love the comments that you have generated. You said nothing about religion, yet Christians are blamed for your plight. You and people like you have only one agenda, yet I am the one who is supposedly close minded. One person above even had the audacity to label your question/comment as logical, what a joke. At best it is a question born of emotion.

Cuz they're hypocrites. Let me tell you that I'm not against gay marriage because it'll ruin the institution, I'm against gay marriage cuz it's a holy institution for men and women. And yeah! It's holy! It was invented by the church for men and women. If you want civil unions, have your civil unions, but marriage before God it's only for men and women.
