4x means 4 times an unknown number (x) which equals 12.

4x=12 you must divide by 4 to both sides of the equation in order to get x by itself. Whatever you do to one side of the equation you must do to the other side of the equation. Thus, you will divide 12 into 4 and get 3 as your answer.
