Try "No Exit" by Sartre. It's about people being trapped in their own personal hells. It's funny as well. Of course, there is always "The Stranger" and "Being and Nothingness" by Sartre. There is also a collection of letters exchanged between Sartre and Simone de Beavoir which you might find interesting if your boyfriend is into existentialism.

try the myth of sisyphus by camus, it's a great first delve into such a topic. satre was a hack but nausea (la nausee) was a pretty good book. what you should really get your boyfriend into is kafka, he's the blacksheep cousin of existentialism.

The Stranger is the obvious choice, but don't start with that!--start with Waiting for Godot. It's funny, and in my opinion, a much better novel.
