They can be quite dangerous but if you follow proper procedures you should be OK.
Get yourself a pellet trap as a background.
I have a .177 with a 1,000' muzzle velocity and use a 1/2" plywood board as a backdrop behind a wooden block on which I place tin cans.
Never point at anything you don't intend to shoot, and always keep it unpumped, unless you are getting ready to shoot something (target).
How old are you? Your mother may have some idea about how mature you are... and worry. Or she is just one of those people who don't understand that guns are just tools.

The answer depends on how mature he is. I have known 10 year olds that are more mature around guns than some adults. If he has been responsible with other things like toys and tools, he's probably OK for a BB gun. If he doesn't take care of his other stuff or do his chores or otherwise act maturely, it may be too early. BB guns can be dangerous, but they can also be learning tools. If you decide to get one, make sure he understands that he can lose the privilege to play with it is he does something unsafe. I would recommend a BB rifle instead of a pistol. First, it's easier to aim and shoot, and he will be able to see himself improve as he learns because pistols are often too heavy for a kid to hold steady. A rifle is easier to control. Also, having a pistol might encourage him to copy gangsters he sees on TV and in movies, and that may prove to be dangerous. Guns (BB guns included) are excellent teaching tools. You can show him how to shoot safely, and he can practice on targets and improve his accuracy. As he gets older, and proves himself more responsible, you might look at getting real guns, and the learning continues.

Yep! A friend of mine when we were young had his ear drum permanently damaged when playing in his back yard the neighbor kid was shooting his bb gun at a target he had set up in is own yard, he missed the target and blew out my friends ear drum instead. Oh yea he had also shot his own baby sister in the face and now she see the world through a glass eye.

BB guns can be very dangerous. I have scars from BB guns from when I was a kid. the ricochet and go every where. you can break a window or accidentally hit somebody else or your self. A guy friend of mine got hit between the eyes of a BB the ricocheted off a tree and he had to go to emergency to have it removed. Listen to your mother and play it safe!

Depends on your towns ordinances. In my town it falls under firearms. They can be dangerous, even the airsoft. We were out driving cattle and a couple bulls started fighting instead of moving, so my buddy took a bbgun to stimulate them to quit fighting and get moving. While it didn't break it up the bull he shot the bb embedded itself in the bull's hide and actually drew blood.
When I was a kid I killed dozens of birds with my Daisy. So yes they are dangerous.

yes in most areas it is, a bb can go out of your yard and then hit a pet or a small child and cause some dammage, its best to follow rules while you are at home. once you move out. well if you get picked up by the cops, thats your problem

Mom's are that way, she's just worried. Has she used the "You'll shoot your eye out" Ploy on ya yet? And I don't think they're illegal but if you actually shot someone with it you would get in big legal troubles :(=
