The best way of doing this for windows XP is placing your Windows xp disc into your cd/dvd drive and start the computer up. It should say " press any key to boot from CD", press any key and let it go through the motions until it says " repair / new installation". Delete the partition ( it will tell you how), Note: this will erase all files and programs on the hard drive, then create a new partition and format it using NTFS. Then you will be installing a fresh copy of XP onto your computer. If you have any trouble you can take it to a computer shop or you can contact me. Just say XP format and I will Know who you are. Good luck

if you have a restore disk, just put that in and follow the instructions. It'll get the PC back to exactly the way it was when you bought it. You will have to download all of the current Windows updates when you're through.
If you don't have a restore disk, but have a valid Windows Disk, just insert the disk and follow the instructions for a new install (not an upgrade).
Remember, to back up anything you want to keep first.

To truley get everything off your hard drive all you need is a "Disk Washer" or "Eraser". When formatting the hard drive, many times the drive is not really erased, sector by sector. Using a Disk Eraser (Such as Wipe Drive) will actually write a random character in every space possible totally across the drive. (Three wipes across the drive is the Dept of Defense Standard)
Search Google for Eraser programs as there are many out there , and some are even Shareware.

you need to format the hard drive then re install Windows and all the drivers that came with the pc...if you havent done this before then it would be wise to find a mate who has to help you or take the computer to your local pc service shop....here in Australia the service would cost about $130
