Just surprise him, a gift is best when it's a surprise. Your English sounds pretty good actually, better than *some* native speakers who post on here anyway.

A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of online courses which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

You do not need to tell him. When you tell someone that you are getting them a gift it is like you are asking them to get you a gift also.Just surprise them with it. Besides a lot can happen between now and Christmas. You never know what may happen! Best wishes and keep being nice!

A gift should not be spoken of, just given to the recipient. It would be considered rude to say "I have decided what I will buy you for Christmas".

Why tell him? Why not just wait til Christmas, and surprise him with the gift? Best wishes.

Don't tell him anything. It's a long time until Xmas, and your friendship could change by then. By the way, your english is fine!

A gift should be from the heart and should have no strings or ulterior motives...never give expecting something in return.
