They do exist in the United States.... but I am not aware of any in NY. In southwest Utah, for example, there is Old Frisco Mining Town on state road 1, and Old Iron Town off state rd 56. Most US ghost towns come to be so because a mining town sprung up around a mine and some years or decades later the mine became uneconomic. In the desert and semi-arid regions of the West there's literally nothing to keep people going in such a place if it's too far to commute to a city from.

There's one, similarly formerly mining-dependent, ghost town in Britain, the 19th century copper port of Morwellham on the Tamar on the Devon-Cornwall border.

Ghost towns can also arise when a port silts up or when a town is deliberately moved (like Old Sarum near Salisbury in Wiltshire, England).

I think the last person to leave is usually a stubborn old man who has no economic opportunity elsewhere (too old), no close family to go and stay with, doesn't feel the need for friends, and has the spirit of self-sufficiency (and the practicality for it) that is so common in the US and especially in the West.

As for New York state.... the South Bronx in NYC is rundown, wouldn't you say?

my personal opinion is that ghst somehow manage to escape from hell, or, weren't christians, and didn't go to heaven, but were beautiful people, and regret their sins, so didn't go to hell, but i like the escape from hell better. i do believe in ghosts.
