I agree it is expensive. You should bring at least 20,000 yen. Depenidng on the reception it will last about 2-3 hours and you sit and eat and listen to someone make a speech or sing or something like that. If you think that the money is too expensive or you do not want to sit around for 2-3 hours then politely decline.
If you think that it would be a good experience, then definitely go.

Having a foreigner attend your wedding in Japan is llike a status symbol. For the foreigner him/herself, attending can be auqward, especially depending on how much/little Japanese you know. I've heard stories where foreingers have been asked to speak (do a speech) all of a sudden during the reception.
You would need to give a 20 000 yen gift presented in the proper envelope. At the end of the reception, you'd get a return gift, usually plates, glasses, etc that you'd have to bring back home with you.
I would politely decline saying "ano hi, chotto yo ga atte...sumimasen". On that day I'm a little busy.
either way, good luck!

I would say 20000-30000 in the correct envelope is appropriate. I would say go; because a Japanese wedding reception is good show, you get to "network", the food is usually good, the bar is open, and you always get some swag. All things considered, it's not bad value for the money by the standards of Japanese prices. The after-parties usually rock, although everyone minds their manners at the reception.

By all means, go. What a wonderful experience for you. Give whatever you would give if you were going to a non Japanese wedding. Or even better, do some checking into what the traditions are. Have fun.
Try this site. It has some interesting ideas on it for gifts. http://www.japan-guide.com/forum/quereadisplay.html?0+6946

Attending a Japanese wedding in Japan is kinda expensive. YOu might have to fork up around 200 bucks for the gift because it's traditional.
