Alright I found this 1994 Toyota MR2, its in great condition as far as the body and only 56k on it, the guy wants 3000 for it.. Its a good price but my dad insists its not becasue the timing belt needs to be changed every 60000 miles and costs around 450 bucks, is this true that it has to be changed this often? Or is it he doesnt want me to get it.. I mean damn with the power it has and the gas mileage it gets you cant go wrong, especially its look too.. whats the verdict?

You may be able to negotiate with the seller. The timing belt will most likely last beyond 60K but many engines will allow the valves to contact the pistons if the timing belt breaks. (This would wreck the engine). You should not go too much beyond the recommended service interval to service it.

Tell the seller you want $250 off the price and save up the other $200 over the next several months. The belt will not likely break at 60K but by 70 or 75K you should definitely have it done.

Great price, low miles, why haven't you purchased it already? Even with the price of a timing belt, brakes, tires, tune up, etc. Add it all together and then go with your father to the Toyota dealership, with the total price of any maintenance items the car may need. Look around the lot and find a used car they are selling with the same amount of miles, and compare the difference in cost between the car you want and how much more expensive it could be. It should not be that hard for your father to see which is cheaper. It's a no-brainer, even if you had to change the timing belt once a year, that is one month's car payment on some new models.

Even if you figure the cost of a timing belt, which you should, it is a very good price for that vehicle. Do a car fax check and have the car checked out by your own mechanic prior to purchase, but it seems like a good deal to me!!

Change the belt yourself, it's every 90k miles. A belt is about 60 bucks....

wow ignore the guy who told you to get a cavalier (or however you spell it) the MR2 is sweet, and the belt should last until 90,000 or more. i have a old Honda with 120,000 and have not had to replace it yet. . and don't forget about drifting that thing.
