He played the majority of his career with the Philadelphia A's but is mostly remembered with the Red Sox now. For his time, he was considered a big man, with huge biceps, that he liked to show off. Like a lot of players in the old days, Jimmie Foxx didn't take care of himself, and drank too much, and eventually it caught up with him. He actually tried to come back as a pitcher, and pitched 9 games for the Phillies in 1945, and started two! Seriously. His numbers were great for the short time he pitched.

He then managed in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball league, which is featured in "A League of Their Own". Tom Hanks's character is modeled after Jimmie Foxx, a former slugger who is down on his luck.

Foxx died in Miami at 59 in 1967.

Well, according to Wikipedia, "Some sources attribute this to a drinking problem, while others attribute it to a sinus condition." More than likely, it was a combination of those two and age.

Similarly, look at Dale Murphy, who went from hitting 25-40 homers a year to hitting 24, 24, 2, and then was suddenly gone from the majors.

In the pre-steroid days, most players saw their abilities drop quickly. Not to drag Barry Bonds into it, but one of the factors that lead many (myself included) to believe he was using was the way his numbers went up as he got older, in total contrast to the usual course of events.

You know the movie "League of Their Own"? Tom Hanks plays the manager as you know, and his character was made to portray Jimmie Foxx ( though that wasnt the actual name in the movie). He was HR champ and had a phenonminal career in the movie, Hanks did, then beer and drugs brought him down.

They mentioned last nght on ESPN his record of being the youngest to reach 500 homers.....but he pretty much disappeared after that with he letting himself go to waste with his bad habits.......he batted something like 320 plus lifetime.....he batted something like 340 that year he hit 50 and had 175RBI's.....compared to "Papi's" numbers.......Ortiz did not come close to the season Foxx had....must have been a hell of a player....
