My daughter sprayed pump (non-aerosol) OFF! bug spray on my dining room table. Although I wiped it off within a minute or two, and immediately tried to clean off the remnants with Old English cleaner, it left marks in the finish. I don't know whether it ate the finish away or if the marks are just topical (i.e., on top of the finish). Any ideas on what I can do to restore the finish without completely stripping the tabletop and refinishing it?
Thanks!

Try this. Get the finest grade of rubbign compound made by Maquires for auto bodies, spread some of that on the table in a small spot, then use a rotary polisher (Ryobi $30 or so bucks at Home Depot) and keeping it damn, go over the whole table like that. I doubt that the bug spray ate through your finish, just speckled it.

If it is a clear gloss finish simply purchase a bottle of Formby's High Gloss tung oil finish. Get the satin or low gloss if that is the table finish. next clean the table top with Lemon Oil Furniture Polish and wipe dry. With a lint-free cloth (wear Nitrile gloves) apply a coat of the Tung oil finish to the entire table top, include any extension leaves so that all look identical. Do not use the table for 24 hours to give the finish plenty of time to cure.

This should make the table like new. Under NO circumstances apply any sand paper to the table. If any abrasive is required you need to let a professional refinish the table.

You need to buy a table for your dining room. You need one that fits your color scheme. You need to buy one that is on sale, you will get so much more table for so much less cash that it only makes sense, and besides, do you want to break the law, especiallly the law of nature? You will need the table to fill with mail and things. If you think you should avoid purchasing the table because you eat in front of the TV, then move your TV to the dining room. It is your patriotic duty to buy the table. Congress has invested a lot to buy your vote by creating the Economic Stimulus Tax Rebate. You would be selfish to keep it and not spend it on something to stimulate the economy, such as the table. The furniture sales person is counting on you to stimulate their personal economy. They haven't been selling that much lately, and you already know how much of manufacturing has been shifted overseas. And the children, those poor little children have had to cut back on their after-school snacks. Their mothers are being forced to skewer left-over Brussels Sprouts and freeze them as a cold treat. So this Memorial Day do your patriotic duty and spend your rebate on that beautiful dining room table, then invite some veterans over to share it with.

Most large home centers carry a product named RESTORE. It even out rough finishes and things such as water spot and scuffed places. Wash the table very well with soap and water and let dry before using. Follow the directions on package from there.

Try Murphy's Oil Soap on it, then polish it with a non-silicon polish. I doubt the bug spray ate through the finish. Furniture finishes are designed to withstand much more than that.

The DEET in the Off probably took some of the finish off of the table. The alcohol trick is a good one but you may still have to refinish the top. That doesn't have to be too difficult and you might enjoy it once you get started.

I cant use OFF because it burns my skin and whatever formula they were using about 15 years ago used to take my nail polish off.

I think it ate away at your table and you are going to have to sand and refinish it. Contact a local furniture repair shop and see what they have to say about it.

mixing two chemicals, deet and alcohol, may not be a good idea. lay a sheet over the table and run an iron over it, (with it on of course). I have been told it works to remove water stains.

try this in a small area first. apply rubbing alcohol to the affected area with a cloth. before it dries, give it a blast with a blow dryer. this works for water stains (guaranteed). the alcohol will not harm the wood. good luck.
