I love burning candles but not incense. I don't buy scented candles anymore. I was given a unique gift last year from a family member. It's a candle wax holder, that has a small light bulb inside. It has a removable top, that holds the little block of scented candle wax. Plug the wax holder in & in no time at all, the light bulb begins to slowly melt the fragrant candle wax cube. That wonderful aroma, fills the house for hours. The scented wax cubes, come in a small plastic case. When the cube of wax, no longer has a scent, I warm the melted wax that's in the top, & once it's melted, I pour it into a glass jar. I then add another scented cube of wax to the top of the candle wax holder. These wax burners can be found at Wal Mart & the scented candle cubes, are nearby. I buy about six of the candle wax cubes & I alternate the scents when I want a different scent. My favorite scent, is Vanilla Shortbread. I believe Better Homes & Gardens makes the candle wax holders. They look like a fancy vase & come in many pretty colors & designs. They make great anytime gifts.

Carpet deodorizers are nice. The kind you sprinkle on like Arm n Hammer for pets smells really good.
We use candles a lot. Also if you want a quick fix to make your home smell nice, put some water and a little cinnamon into a pot and simmer on the stove for about 15 minutes. Mmmmmm
Here are some homemade deodorizer recipes you might like. I personally use the febreeze recipe and it works quite well.

I never had great luck with the "plug ins" either. They didn't last nearly as long as they say they will.

I too have Yankee Candles. Not only are they more economical to buy in the 22 ounce size, but it's important to remember that the larger the "puddle" of candle wax, the more the fragrance will be intensified. For instance, a votive or tea candle has the lightest scent of all.
In addition, I found the most marvelous product at Target. It is a scented strip that one hangs on the furnace filter. Every time the heat or air-conditioning blower kicks on, a light fragrance wafts out. I have bought both Clean Cotton and Cinnamon and both are delightful.

i use the oil plug-ins i have two in each room and have to replace them about every three weeks but i have a rather large house i also have a carpet shampooer and instead of regular carpet cleaner i use the orange pine-sol or you can even use your favorite laundry detergent just use a de-foamer also another quick trick for a fast spruce up instead of the canned air freshners use your favorite fabric softner like i use gain tropical and dillute it some with water and spray you can use a fifty cent water bottle for this however that's just a quick freshner nothing permanent i know my aunt uses the oil plug-ins from bath and body works they smell great but are even more expensive than the glade ones which i do recommend glade over wizzard or any other brand something else you can do is get the old fashioned round twist air freshners you know the ones with the little sticky thing you can put them on top of your ceiling fan blades just make sure they are clean so they stick well i have also used the car air freshners inside my air conditioner vents just stick it inside of it

I've discovered that if I keep the house freshly vacuumed and mopped, it helps eliminate kitchen smells. Fresh bed linen for the beds, etc. I burn incense outside and occasionally light an oil burner inside...... and of course, never allow anyone to smoke indoors.

I like the Air Wick plug-ins, also the rings for your light bulbs. DON'T PUT OIL DIRECTLY ON A HOT BULB--IT WILL EXPLODE. You can keep a bowl in your microwave with some of your favorite spices like cloves and cinnamon and heat it for a couple of minutes. Also, wearing a nice perfume works.
