If you're not opposed to second hand, you can get some really cheap (less than $20). Also, check around for upscale resale shops. I've seen a couple shops in Boulder Colorado that had awesome clothes from many eras. They were really cheap. Otherwise, I'd have to recommend Sears, David's Bridal on the clearance racks, even check the classifieds in the newspaper.

It all depends on where and when you shop. Some dresses in deparments stores can cost two or three hundred dollars, but there are alternatives. You can always go to a thrift or vintage store and get some great vintage dresses for as little as 10. Just look around!

I like the dresses from Dillards.for about 50 bucks you can get a very nice dress and look like a million bucks with the right shoes and accessories. The thing is you might not be the only one wearing that dress, do you mind?If you do decide to spend a little more I would go with something from BEBE.

whoever said $50-$250 is crazy!
Go to Kohls or some cheap store. Don't pay more than $50 for sure. Unless you can find more than one use out of it. Why be silly and waste all your money on ONE dress that you're going to wear once? If you're going to spend a lot of money on a dress, then save it up and spend it on your prom dress.

You'd be surprised how many super pretty dresses you can find at a thrift (2nd hand) store.
