A given pair of binoculars are limited by their power and their optical workmanship and of course what they are attempting to view. An 8 power pair of binoculars magnifies the image by 8 times. A 10 power pair of binoculars magnifies the image by 10 times. But some 8 power binoculars are able to resolve images better than some 10 power binoculars because the optics are of better quality. Binoculars being in general hand held instruments are limited to the amount of power that is usable, about 10, before the steadiness of the hand hold becomes a problem in viewing.

That is where a tripod becomes very usefull and a spotting scope, which have magnification of up to 60 power or more. A decent spotting scope on a tripod has an incredible reach.
