really bad year for tomatoes and most everything for that matter. my tomatoes (same kinds as yours) wanted to rot as soon as they ripened- i picked them early- and alot had black spots. i hate fried green tomatoes but i sure could have alot of them. i got 2 green peppers out of six plants altho the plants were 2 ft high. good year for sqash and the apple crop would knock your socks off. go figure. i heard that it is because of no rain during pollination when it is really critical.

This was not a good year for tomatoes at all. I had the same problem but I also had problems with blossom end rot. UGH
Split tomato skins is caused by too little water for a time and then getting a whole bunch of water at once. Yes...irregular watering.
As for tough skins...would probably be caused by the weather.

The split skins result from irregular watering.
As for the thick skins....breeders have been hybridizing tomatoes for the commercial markets. They breed thick skins in, so they can hold up to being transported. They breed for disease resistance, etc etc etc, but somehow forgot to leave the flavour in!
My best advice is to stick with Heirloom tomatoes!

Why didn't you just peel them? I drop my tomatoes into hot boiling water for a few seconds and the peel comes off just great. They probably split from the heat and the rain.

Tomatoes split when they have had too much water over the season.

I was told by a gardener friend that irregular watering will cause the skin to split.

Mine did too. The moist in the ground and watering and the sun. Everyone's did. What kind of soil? Cow crap in it and too much will do it too. But the moist in the air and ground and not and Say not pulling your suckers off and the old branchs.

Water stayed on the surface of the fruit for extended periods, particularly when the fruit is stressed by high heat and low humidity.

They weren't watered enough along with high temperatures. Maybe you need to add something to your soil. Go to your local Extension office and they can test your soil to let you know what the problem may be.
