Read your text book. Afterward, if you still need those answers, ask the "reference desk" at your local library. State boundries were made over a 200 year interval and the criteria were different most of the time. Some states were split from others. Be sure to check out the attempt to make "the State of Franklin."

California got its shape from the ubiquitus banana fruit.
Before the coming of man, the Island of Montereymus was located just offshore of California. On Montereymus grew just millions and millions of banana trees. These trees bore fruit all season long. One year, which is well documented by tree ring science, the Earth was hit by a large falling object that came from the outer space galaxies somewhere. This big object came down and hit the Earth with so much force that all the bananas on Montereymus fell to the ground. A tidal wave swept across the island a short time later and washed all the bananas out to sea and they eventually landed on the shores of California. That is why the coast of California looks like a banana. it is made of lots and lots of babanas.

Prehistoric man came along and lived in California for a while. He was run off by the various Indians, Aztecs, and later by white men with important references. California became a state when some of those very important white men went back to Washington and told the folks there about a wonderful place on the West Coast called California. And, soon everyone wanted California as part of the USA. Well, they voted it into the Union by a close vote after months of arguing, and huge pay offs to a bunch of renegade indians. A line was drawn in the sand using a sharp stick and that became the boundary of California as we know it today. The folks from Washington, DC, moved on up from that staked out territory of California and started making homes for themselves way up there. Wouldn't you know it, they named their new "not-california" home places "New Washington." The "New" in New Washington got dropped over time. And that is how that happened.
