You don't really "buy" friends, you apply for them. And the sororities and fraternities are applying for friendship as well. If you find that you like a specific group, and that they like you too, it's a way of connecting with people you have common ground with.
On the other hand, I never joined a sorority because I don't like being with all of the same type of people all of the time.

That's kind of a cynical look at it. My experience is that at large schools, it is a way to find a smaller group to belong to. At small schools, it is harder to see why people would choose to join a Greek organization other than for status within a certain group.

Some may feel so but I believe that once you graduate you can use it as a great networking tool. Go to Meet the Greeks and see what sorrorities match your needs and personality. I wish you the best.

im in Beta Theta Pi and Johns Hopkins University. I joined because i love to party and drink and dance. it does get you friends, but most frat boys are socially able to get friends wthout the need of a fraternity

In a sense, you can look at it that way.
Many kids join them because their parents, or other relatives were also members.
Some people want to be a part of a group or club. I bet many others who may not have the means would join if they could.
