Sorry, I dont know who shouted "land...land".

I do know, however, that statement is not 100% true. Columbus was not the FIRST to dscover America. It was actually the Chinese. I know, I was suprised too. The thing is that most the Chinese records of the discovery of America were destroyed due to the current emperor's non-belief in sea exploration. Therefore there was never an interest in developing a civilization on the newfounded land.

Just imagine if that emporer had pursued the development of America. Life would be so different today. Its really quite interesting.

England, on the other hand, invested in a strong naval fleet, using the seas to conquer a large portion of the world. Anyway, Colombus is credited for discovering America because he has the records to prove it. Chinese maps of the New World have recently been found, dating back to 1421!

I could go on and on, but I truly think the textbooks will need to be changed, giving credit to China for discovering America.

Columbus did not "discover" America. He accidentally stumbled upon it while trying to find a way to the orient. It would also be interersting to note that a different calendar was in use during the 1400's. But I really can't remember if it was the Julian or Gregorian. But anyhow, it was Diego Garcia who was at the mast head when he saw a light in the distance, and was really not sure if it were land or the light at the end of the tunnel. Columbus sailed on, and land was in sight when the sun rose the next morning.

As the caravel Pinta was a better sailer, and went ahead of the Admiral, she found the land, and made the signals ordered by the Admiral. The land was first seen by a sailor named Rodrigo de Triana. But the Admiral, at ten o'clock, being on the castle of the poop, saw a light, though it was so uncertain that he could not affirm it was land. He called Pero Gutierrez, a gentleman of the King's bedchamber, and said that there seemed to be a light, and that he should look at it. He did so, and saw it. The Admiral said the same to Rodrigo Sanchez of Segovia, whom the King and Queen had sent with the fleet as inspector, but he could see nothing, because he was not in a place whence anything could be seen.

After the Admiral had spoken he saw the light once or twice, and it was like a wax candle rising and failing. It seemed to few to be an indication of land; but the Admiral made certain that land was close. When they said the Salve, (Salve Regina) which all the sailors were accustomed to sing in their way, the Admiral asked and admonished the men to keep a good look-out on the forecastle, and to watch well for land; and to him who should first cry out that he saw land, he would give a silk doublet, besides the other rewards promised by the Sovereigns, which were 10,000 maravedis to him who should first saw it. At two hours after midnight the land was sighted at a distance of two leagues."

Actually, Columbus had slaves in his boat. The slaves were trying to figure out how to get off the boat, but they couldn't swim. So while the slaves were sleeping and some sun light from the morning sun, shined in there eyes. One of the slaves got up and he saw land in his eye sight, and alerted the others. Masa there is land, land masa land.

Hahahaha. Just joking, I don't know who the first person to say that was. It's all he say she say. One person says Indians found America and then others say Columbus did but who knows.

columbus did not discover america. Historically, the vikings arived before columbus, and japanese fishing boats also were among the first.

This view is biased however, because of course, the native americans were the first to truly discover the continent.

columbus is a frickin' idiot. don't ever give him credit for finding america. all he did was go there, and take things from the natives. like their resources. and their lives. columbus should not be remembered.

I'm not sure if you're a student, but if you are and your teacher is asking you to research this question...ask your teacher to define what he/she means by the word "discover" and that perhaps he/she should be more conscious of the way in which he/she phrases his/her lectures.
