Doing stunts at 280mph.... was bound to end in tears. Hero for having the guts, or idiot for doing it with a wife and two small kiddies who depend on him?

I think neither. Of course it may be silly to put your life at unneccessary risk when you have children to consider but it's the choice he made and he will have to live with the consequences, or his wife will, if he lives and becomes dependant on her or if he dies it is alot for her to cope with so I would say it's selfish. I wish him well though.

Neither, he just had a dream! And even though he failed at something and is paying for it, he WILL bounce back! The Hamster Rocks!! He's not the only person who has tried to break the land speed record, are they stupid for doing this too! He will have known the dangers and took the chance.
I just hope he has the best recovery possible, cos Top Gear would not be the same without him! Get well soon Hamster!

When were you last asked if you wanted to break the world land-speed record? We all take risks. If he's an idiot, then so is everyone who tried to go to the North/South Pole, climb Everest, survive in the desert, go into space etc. etc. Next time you board a plane, ask youself, "Am I an idiot?" Well yes you might be, "Am I a hero?" Doubtful.

You're wrong on both counts, it didn't HAVE to end in tears, the guy obviously lives life to the full, and if you don't think he and his wife have talked about the possible dangers, then you don't give him enough credit. Most people go through life experiencing the same thing a thousand times, instead of experiencing a thousand things once. I wish him well, and expect him back at the wheel.........

He is a Fantastic bloke who lives his life doing what he loves, he does not need people critising him while he lays in hospital.

He is neither a hero or an idiot, he is just someone who loves life and speed and all things dangerous. his wife knew this when she married him, why should she expect him to chnage who he is to suit her.

I hope he recovers, and i think if he does he will probably try it again! he is that type of guy!

Best wishes to Hammie....

To open a debate on wether Richard is an idiot or not at whilst he is battling for his life isn't the best thing you could have done. Cut him some slack.

ok so the guy made a bad judgement call, and came a croppa. richard has made me laugh for years, and I look forward to seeing him weekly on the idiot box.... im sure he thought the attempt was well controlled and didnt he have a suicide wish, but if i was his wife (lucky girl) i'd not have let him do that..... but now i wish i could pinch those gorgeous cheeks and tell him all will be ok... and id imagaine he'd have some dry witty reply...

I thought he was a TV presenter on TopGear, didn't know that made you either.
Shame about the accident would of been great for the programme to have held the British Land Speed record.
