I tip at least 20%, however it also depends where you work too, if you work at Denny's and the average meal is 20 bucks, you're only going to get a 4 dollar tip. Work at some wanky place were the average guest ticket is 80, for the same amount of work, you get 16 bucks.

Hm, there are some good answers in here, so I won't repeat. I did want to add though that it depends where you work. If you are in a tourist area, then yea, expect to get crap sometimes for tips. My bf who is a bartender loves the snow birds, including the Canadians in Florida because they almost always are great tippers. The europeans are a tough crowd and not because they are rude or mean, they just don't know what tipping is all about. There is no tipping in Europe, so while they may seem cheap, they have no idea what they're doing. Some restuarants make it easier for them by printing on the bottom of the receipt what is acceptable with 20% for good service, 15% for satisfactory/fair and 10% for poor. It helps.
When my bf and I go out he regularly gives 20% and with great exceptional service we've given 30%, especially with our larger bills or if we spent over an hour or two at the table we'll leave $30 or even $50 for a tip, just from the two of us.

I have been at restaurants where I had to get up and ask someone for a refill on my drink, where the waitress came took the order, left the food, and then handed us a bill.
We ordered burgers, had to ask a waiter for ketchup and mustard, has no creamers for the coffee. Had to get my own refill. Asked for water and never got it.
What kind of tip did this waitress deserve? Nothing, But we did leave something.
My son was a waiter, he never got crummy tips, he smiled, he talked with people, he made sure they always had drinks and were happy with their food. He actually shocked me when I saw him working, not the same kid at home.
How much effort you put in your job is related to what you get out.
One time the waiter told us he was giving us a free entree, because we waited so long for our food. We were talking and did not even notice and we told him so. Besides the 20%, we gave him 1/2 the cost of the entree as a tip.
Think about these things.

Before I even sit down, I start out with a 20% tip in mind. That amount dwindles if I receive poor service. Most of the time I tip between 15% to 18%. Rarely have I left a 20% tip. So even if the service sucks you still get 15%.
P.S. Its restaurants and cruel. Try spell check, its right there above the box.

i run a resterant(Restaurant) for those that can spell. i have dealt with servers for many years and the one thing that drives me crazy is they believe that tips are part of the bill. that cannot be farther from the truth, i have seen servers ignore guest still expecting money to be sitting on the table when the guest leaves. Tipping is a courtesy, your job is your job. either way the guest is not a $$ they are people that need to be served and if you do it right you will make money. not all people tip well but the 1st thing you need to look at is your performance. "ARE YOU DOING EVERYTHING YOU CAN FOR THEM?"

If you live in the US tipping should be 15-20% of your bill. In some countries, Canada, Bahamas, ....the tip is added into the check. I worked in a diner during school, so I know how cheap people can be. Most restaurant/bar employees are working mainly for tips.

I think it's a general lack of manners. When my husband and I go out we always tip 15%, no matter how bad the service, If we had good to really great service we'll tip more. Of course we have both worked at jobs where tips were part of our pay, so that makes us more aware.

As a waitress myself I always try to tip good, unless the waitress is just plain out rude, you can always tell the difference between new and just plain out stupid, some ppl don't realize you don't get a very good pay check so they tip less and some ppl just don't give a sh*t.
