Details: Middle school- 6th grader Practice is M-F 1.5 hours it involves stretching, sprints and paced running. Meets every Saturday morning and Wed evenings. 1.9 mile race.

Basically, my question is this- should she be running 2 miles on Sundays as well? This is the only day she is not running. One day out of the week to rest. Please let me know any advice or suggestions.

I feel a 7 day schedule is a bit too rigorous for an 11 year old. I am being critisized for not being "serious" about this by her father.

Your body needs some time off to rest!

I run marathons, and even though I'm not going to break any world records I have a pretty good pace (around 3:30). I only train 3-4 days a week, and only one of those runs is longer than 4 miles. Too many distance runners think the only way to improve their times is to run more miles per week. But when you do this, you keep your body from resting and getting stronger.

At her age, she needs the time off. Maybe when she gets to college level and is training for the olympics, she can do a 7 day a week schedule. But for now it will probably do more harm than good.

For an 11 year old a 6 day regiment might be too much, but since two of those days are meets it wont take as much out of her as practice does. Her body does need to rest, but if she insists on being active I would do 1 mile in the morning and another mile in the evening

Whoa!!! Slow down a second. Your daughter is in grade 6 she is not 26! I am also a cross-country runner ( and a good one not to brag) and I think everyone needs a break once a week. Last year I ran a lot and got burned out. It is good that your daughter is showing so much determination but are you sure its what she really wants. Talk to her. She might feel that she is missing out on friends or her school experience by running all the time. Good luck!

I was in the military and we ran 5 mi a day. However we did not do any PT or running on Sunday. The muscles get little tears in them when you are putting them through such rigors and they do need a recovery day. I would recommend swimming a few laps which will help her with her breathing for distance and build up her lung capacity.

Let her rest because if you don't rest, then you can seriously injur yourself, and it could cause serious muscle pain in the future. In order to build muscle, you need to let it rest so it can build on to itself to get stronger. Listen your husband....it is WAY to harsh. And its very unhealthy!
