children + adults = 40
children = 4 + adults
Substituting in the 3rd equation
4+adults + adults = 40
2adults = 40-4
adults = 36/2
adults = 18, children = 4+18 = 22
total = 18 + 22 = 40

so thats 2x+4=40
subtract 4 from both sides
2x=36
divide 2 from both sides
x=18
x is number of adults so18 plus 4 is 22
