My english class hasn't been going well. We are currently reading a greek mythology book and we are quizzed on a chapter of it every other day, and she allows us to use notes. But somehow, even with my notes, I recieved a 70 and a 78. (Also got a 90 and a 100, but there was a quiz today that I know i got a 50 on). Am I not taking proper notes? Or should I get extra help after school? I also do about an hour of homework a night for that class. What am I doing wrong?

Note: Out of my class, even with my C grades, I am one of the highest scorers in my class, but still feel like it is me and not the difficulty of the course. I take lots of notes. Maybe it is the style? Tips would help.

There can be a lot of things not going right from the teacher not teaching to study habits. Here is what I suggest. Read the whole chapter that will be tested in advance and when she starts throwing notes at you you will have a better understanding of them. Be sure to take notes a lot. If you use a shorthand of your own creations that is okay. By that I mean you can leave out all but the facts. Make your notes short but also make sure they are understandable to you. Take down everything she is teaching. I do not know if it is allowed but a small tape recorder may come in handy to help take notes but do not rely on that alone.

As far as after school tutoring, there is nothing wrong with that either. Take every advantage you can to get your grades up.

One thing I have found about learning something. It seems you learn a lot teaching others. See if you can start something with your friends that share the same class . Each one of you has to teach the other a new fact on the homework. It is just an idea but try it.

Well, compare the quiz questions to your notes. Are the answers things that you have written down? One problem may be that you are not getting the important things written.

Also, perhaps the quiz questions you are missing are higher-level thinking questions that aren't going to be in your notes. For those, you'd have to do some critical thinking and come to your own conclusions.

Just look at your quizzes and see what's "missing."

It is definitely an idea to talk to the teacher after class or after school. It is still early on in the marking period and semester to fix the problem. Maybe, she has a different idea about the important material in the class than you do. It is an idea to maybe get on the same page as her which means asking for her advice.

your teacher may just be wording the questions differently than when she discusses them in class. Write down everything your teacher says about book, sine you never know what will be on the test. Also, go through the chapters the quiz will be on and write down anything that seems important to you.

It is your note taking. Ask yourself some questions about what you read (the standard who what where when how & why) helps for starters.

Ask yourself about the main theme or point of the myth and how the myth is related to common truths...

Also make a note of the characters and their relationship to the myth(s)... Hope this helps...

I preffer notes because you don't have to spend more time in school after school.
