You are saying that all the Vietnamese people that lost their lives to protect their country shouldn't be respected as much as the 16th president of the United States. To me, it's not fair. No memorial should be treated less. They should all be treated equally because they all have a meaning. Saying that was very disrespectful. You should apologize right now. You are disrespecting me, my family, the people who lost their lives in the war, and everyone in Vietnam. You know who you are.

What a sad question.

The Lincoln Memorial is a beautiful classic building with an emotive statue. It has two inspirational readings carved into its walls. I don't think anyone who cares about the history of the USA, and the history of human struggles against injustice, can pass there unmoved, especially since the site has the added emotion of the MLK speech.

On the other hand, the Vietnam memorial is a wall. It is not artistically beautiful in the same architechtural sense, but if art consists of reaching human emotions, wouldn't you say that this is art? Maybe it is only art for the current generation of people who lost family or friends in Vietnam and are moved by seeing their names. In 200 years will it mean anything at all to anyone when the names there are completely disconnected from any living person. I don't think that it will maintain its emotional energy in the future. It certainly does move people now.

I don't know how anyone can be sidrespectful in either of these spaces, but when I was in Washington last July and was standing in the VIetnam memorial a big, fat lady walked her dog down there and was talking in a loud voice the whole time about some problem with her daughter. She got a string of dirty looks from some Vets who were there, but she didnt even notice.
Sic transit gloria mundi!!!!

The word memorial means to remember. For me, all memorials should be respected even if the particular memorial doesn't hold a personal significance. I didn't lose anyone in the Vietnam War but seeing the vast numbers of names on that wall was sobering..
