there's no real answer. Everyone has a different motive for what they do. Sometimes we make mistakes out of stupidity, hatred, or ambition. Maybe we just don't know better, maybe its our upbringing..our lack of love or respect for one another. When you find out let me know, but meanwhile i'm just taking it day by day and doing the best I can do as a being. All we can do is hope others do the same..

Because they're human. As simple animals we can be driven powerfully by natural, unregulated inclinations. The strait-jackets of externally prescribed "morality", like any law, can be avoided if we feel no-one will catch and penalise us. More significantly we also have intelligence and imagination to forsee at least some of the consequences of an action, and to choose action with insight - but unless we have really developed our own internal regulating wisdom to employ that intelligence, we tend to act for percieved short-term personal benefit and avoid "sacrificing" that for long term benefits (which are usually less obvious and certain) - or merely to avoid immediate unacceptable costs. Most people also don't appreciate the effects of interdependence - that what we do to "other" affects us, too. Sadly, we usually use our "intelligence" to justify what we want to do, more than for reflection and restraint. You can see all this working in far more serious matters than adultery (which hurts mostly because we assume we can possess others, which is foolish and not truly love, surely).
Look at the Middle East, or any war - and global inaction on climate change, on the grounds anything we do will harm "the economy"; when the economy, and life itself, ultimately depends on the Earth's functioning ecology. It's all sad, isn't it! It seems most of us never learn, perhaps because we're not taught to think. Perhaps that is the most serious failure, and damage, of prescriptive religions and political/economic dogmas. They can substitute for critical thought, and personal responsibility, and offer a lazy way out ... to the repeated disaster that makes human history, for individuals and the species.

1) Humans have two decision-making systems in the brain. The older & stronger one is in the "reptilian" or older parts of the brain, which involves emotion & immediate gratification of the senses. The other, newer system resides in the neocortex & is found in other mammalian brains to some extent - the most in primates.(perhaps cetaceans also).

People see/hear/smell/etc something they like/want/etc. The older, emotional part of the brain kicks in. Have. Want.Get. The battle is nearly over before it starts between control & self-indulgence.

2) But the stronger is not always the victor. The neocortex can be strengthened through practice in self-control excercises. Simply hearing something is bad because someone said so when it feels/tastes/ etc good right now is pretty much proven woefully ineffective in increasing self control. What works?

a. practicing set limits of behavior, speech & thought reinforces the neocortex-driven ability to control our own behavior & choose what we really want to do instead of what we are driven to by the urge of the moment.

b. thinking through to the consequences of our actions, beyond the feel good moment to the years of fatherhood in a low-paying job, or the jail time of drug use, etc.etc. functions ver effectively to overcome the urge of the moment which rarely leads to where our best interests lie.

c.familiarity strengthens whatever we do through repetition. whatever we choose reinforces the ease to make the same choice in the future. (if self control is chosen, the neocortex becomes stronger, & one grows in one's ability to chart one's own choices;....the opposite is equally so.)

In time, with practice & repetition, looking through to the consequences of actions, anyone can unlearn past behaviors & start new ones . The learning capacity of the human brain is incredible!

Without taking steps to reinforce our self control on a regular basis throughout our life (daily is the best) , humans fall prey to the same old mistakes & personal disasters again & again & it's always a big surprise - because the older emotional part of the brain is not very intelligent. The neocortex carries a much greater capacity to think ahead & improve, but without direction it is as effective as a ship without a rudder.

;-)

Humans are animals. Animals are controlled by their genes. Genes want to reproduce. Men commit adultery out of a primitive animal instinct to leave more copies of their genes around (ie father more kids).

This is the biological explanation. If you are the victim of adultery, I'm sure this doesn't make you feel better.

There is so much temptation in this world, and sin is innate in the human nature. Think about when you were little, if your parent told you not to do something, what did you do? Exactly the oposite of what they said! "Don't touch the hot stove." You walk away with a burned hand. People have always wanted what they can't have, and have wanted to do what they're not supposed to do.

I don't know. Those of us who are catholics know of the 10 commandments but as humans we sometimes fail. We are suppose to learn from our mistakes and not repeat them. Maybe those who commit these should pray for guidance.
