Find out what your temperature zone is in Nebraska, I think you could either google that info or call your local State Extension Service.
5/6 zone is pushing your luck, because the tree likes between zones 6 to 9.
I live in Massachusetts and I am a 5/6 and in the coldest winters I do a lot of praying!!!

we had some maple & elm wood on the valuables line. My husband cut back them all the way down to floor point for me. I took a drill with the main important bit that could fit in it & drilled a team of holes into the stump tops. then I filled each hollow with around up weed killer.(offered the huge container of around up which you pump up with air on the look after & it has a sprig wand). I repeated the roundup each week later. there have been no ingredient sprouts in any respect, all summer time.

in maryland they are hard to kill, so unless its extremely bad weather i would say probably no problem
