The thought crossed my mind that Dumbledore suspected it might be a hoarcrux...but then Dumbledore would have destroyed it instead of giving it to Harry.

I've wondered if it had something to do with family ties...is Dumbledore a relative? But then I realized that Dumbledore was not in the mirror of Erised when Harry saw his extended family in it (in the book, but not in the movie).

Then I wondered if Dumbledore was present at the slaying of James and Lily. Was James actually wearing the cloak when he died? Was Voldemort aware that James was present? There is a lot of speculation about Lily throwing herself in front of Harry...where was James when he died? Did James die "invisibly"? Or was he invisible to the last minute, dropped the cloak, and then was killed? Dunno.

I've just asked more questions rather than answering...but it's fun to speculate.

Let's assume that the Potters knew that Voldemort was coming after them and after Harry. There was the chance they would get killed. Which happened... Maybe they put aside some things for Harry... besides the money in the bank. And if so, was the cloak the only thing? Or Harry will get more things from Lily and James? But yes, as Jo said, the answer to this question - why was the cloak with Dumbledore - is crucial. What is the link between Dumbledore and James? Jo said they are not related, but it's getting so complicated....

I always thought that Dumbledore put a spell on the cloak before he gave it to Harry so that he would be the only one that could see through the cloak.

I think its all going to come together in the end and we will know why Dumbledore had the cloak and why he him self was not the person that knew the address to the location of the Potters...It should all come out in the end!1

From the note attached to the cloak when Harry received it, it seems that James left it with Dumbledore to ensure that Harry would have it when he needed it.

i thought he got the cloak after the death to save for harry when he grew up. but if he had the cloak when james died, then that means he either needed it for someone else to use, or was keeping james from using it when attacked by you know who. if dumble dore knew harry would be the one to defeat lord v. eventually, then he had to be attacked by lord v. and get the connection and the scar. if james had had the cloak he might have hidden harry from lord v. and it all might not have happened? but i though dumbledore was never sure if harry was the one in the prediction until he was attacked, so that doesn't make sense. wow.

i always assumed it was one of those things that james' friends and allies would have, and give to harry.... assuming that dumbledore went thru all of james' and lilys' things and took things he wanted harry to have, left the rest in peace..?
