First of all, keep your hands up on the steering wheel until the officer arrives at your window and asks you to roll it down. Do not reach for you registration, license or anything else. You want your hands on the wheel in plain sight. Many police officers are very wired in approaching a traffic stop and may misinterpret your move to get your license or registration as a move to get a weapon. The last thing you need is a hole in your head because you were retrieving your insurance card.
Secondly, be polite, no matter how rude or brusque the officer might be, and some of them can be a royal pain (Courtesy just seems not to be in their vocabulary.)
Finally, listen to what they ask you to do. Don't expect what they ask for to always make sense to you. They can become very jumpy if you try to do other than what they ask.
I am an ex officer. I've worked with some great officers and some real dorks. I hope you always get the great ones to deal with.

Be polite and cooperative. Give them your license, registration and proof of insurance and ask what you are being stopped for. It doesn't do any good to argue and actually helps more in the long run if the cop reports that you were friendly and cooperative. If you show up in court or even write a letter with payment for the ticket, the judge will almost always reduce the ticket if you're polite. I know, I just got another one. i sent them the whole $145 dollars with an explanation of what was happening (a friend of mine was in labor, about to have a baby and I was driving there) and they sent me $35 back. I guarantee that wouldn't have happened if I'd been argumentative.

Simple rules to follow:
1. pull to the right and safely move your vehicle off the roadway. Please don't drive into a ditch.
2. roll down your window enough to hear me.
3. please keep your hands on the steering wheel when I approach. Don't be reaching into the glove box or center console just yet. Plenty of time for that.
4. when asked, please retrieve your license, insurance, and registration. If you have to reach into the glove box, please make sure a large gun isn't in there that you haven't told me about. Also, if you have a baggie full of marijuana, you may as well tell me now because I'm going to see it.
5. relax. yes, you may have been caught skirting the law a bit, but there's no reason to "freak out". answer my questions honestly because I'm trained to catch you in a lie and I will ratchet up the "stop" if I realize you are trying to conceal something.
More than likely, if you follow these rules and you haven't been doing something off the wall AND your information is current, I'll just ask you to correct the issue.
Hope this helps.

If you just got pulled over, how are you writing this question? laptop?
But seriously, do NOT argue with the officers. Roll down your window and keep your hands on the steering wheel as the cops approach you. Give them what they want (usually: license, registration, proof of insurance). If you feel you are being mis-treated, POLITELY ask for their badge number after they are finished or write down their cars license plate number. During a stop, cops have ALL the power. If they misbehave and you have proof, you can do it through complaints or the court.
Although I hate to make race an issue, I will say this: if you are not white, please, please be extra careful. Some (not all) cops are trigger happy. Do NOT get out of the car unless you are asked to do so.

This is advice from a trucker: Keep your hands on the steering wheel until the officer reaches your driver door, keep your seat belt fastened and ask permission to unbuckle it. Stay in the car. When ask have your information available. Very carefully with no quick moves hand them to him. Remember Cops have been shot at simple traffic stops and they are very wary but it is their job to enforce the laws. So do nothing but follow his orders. If you want to argue the ticket do not do it with the cop, there is a place for that and it is called court. I think that is about it, but above all be polite he is just doing his job.

Make sure you conceal all open alcoholic bottles, pills, and weapons. Pull over. If you are a girl, flirt a little while doing what the officer ask. If you are a guy, pray he doesn't realize that you have over 200 parking tickets.
Okay people, I am making funny, funny.
This is where you laugh.

First thing I do is put any weed and pills I have in my underwear real close to my balls cause they dont wanna look there. Then I make sure my gun is in the glove box and take the clip out and put it in the console. Then you just act natural. If they wanna search you, you should tell them there is an unloaded weapon in the car. They get a little upset but if you have no felonies they will let you go and they usually forget all about anything else so you get to go with your stash!
