She has ALS and has informed us she hasn't had a bath 2 weeks, and she fired the nurse(for not making her coffee right).
Well, tomm, she has decided to break down and ask someone to help her take a shower.
Guess who the lucky one was?
I'm nervous, such an uncomfortable situation.

I did it! Of course, I cried all the way home, didn't realize how thin she'd gotten...I'm going to stay more involved!

I cannot blame you for not wanting too. You are not trained to lift someone and it is not your fault she fired the nurse another one could have been hired you sound like a great person to worry about this but she is an adult and needs to fix this problem herself. Since her Son is your boyfriend I have a Mother in Law and I could not help her do it and she would never ask me. Does she have a husband when I broke my shoulder my husband helped me but I would never had asked a friend or my Mom. I am glad there are people like you but if she has ALS she needs special help if you want ask her if you can wash her hair in the sink and can she use her hands still if given a wash cloth she can wash herself you can help with her arms and hands and face but just somethings like a bath if she is able to get in and out of a bath she can take it herself maybe someone in the next room she can yell to if she needs help you and your boyfriend could be a room away. You are not responsible for her and the world is a good place when people like you are out there.

Just go into it with a professional attitude - you are going to be helping an older woman shower, so be prepared for it. Do it efficiently and don't act awkward - it's just the human body. In the meantime, your bf and/or you should also help her find another nurse to come out to her house as you should not be having to bath his mother on a regular basis.

Oh that sound's like a tough situation for you.Maybe she asked you cause your a nice/helpful/trusting/caring person.Maybe she know's that you can do it.Believe me alot of mum's ask there step-daughter's for help.Is he an only child?cant she depend on someone else like a friend or a nurse who's really gentle and is experienced? If you dont like the idea why dont you tell her that you will feel real uncomfortable. That is a very big decision for you to make.Whatever you feel say it dont hold back.If she get's angry about it tell her your not comfortable and need a life of your own with your bf and you to enjoy.Tell your bf strongly how you feel about it be open minded. That's all a mother is asking for.Be genuine and makeup your decision before its to late.

I have been an aide for the elderly and i have been there done that. The easiet way to do it mentally is to just do it and not think about it. The best way physically is to use a shower chair so that she does not fall and break a hip.

It will be o.k. I was nervous when I helped give my sister-n-law Mom a shower. After a few times I got used to it. She had the same illness. You are so good to help with her. God Bless You.

If you are truly uncomfortable with it, I don't think you should do it. Just explain how you feel. Hopefully she will be understanding. If you absolutely feel as though you have to do this, just try and think of it as employment. Maybe that will help. Good Luck

Make sure there is a shower chair. And make sure your boyfriend stays around to help in case she falls.
