The real question is would humanity be better off if people would just shut up about their beliefs.

No. Religion does not have to be a theology or the belief in God as we define it. Religion can be a philosophy based upon beliefs in morality and justice. Religion can be a belief in rational science and logic. Religion can be a set of political views. Religion can be a tolerance of other people's views, or the condemnation of them. Religion can oppose certain things because they are immoral, such as murder and rape and drug abuse. But since theories on ethics and morality are based upon opinion, they are also religious in nature.
What is not religion is anything which is purely objective indisputable fact, like 1+1=2. That's provable, neither opinion nor religion. However, if you believe that 7 is a lucky number, that's religious superstition. If you believe that 13 is unlucky, that's a superstition. If you believe in a heaven or a hell, that's also religion. If you believe certain things are right or wrong, that's philosophy, which is a form of secular religion. If you have political views, since there is no provably "correct" political ideology, then you are religious.
The concept of religion encompasses more than a god, a belief in many gods, spirits, fates, or supernatural beings. It also encompasses beliefs about the natural world.
Everyone HAS a religion. If you have an opinion beyond 1+1=2, then you have your very own religion. We must tolerate the concept of religion because without it, we tolerate no opinions, freedoms of thought, speech, and worship.

Religions are what keep us from going completely crazy. Even though a lot of people take reigions for granted, they really do help us out. If there were no religions than we would want to know the explanation for absolutely everything, we wouldn't know what would happen to us once we died(other than that we got buried, hopefully), we wouldn't know who to ask for for help when we were in troubles. Religion is what keeps us in balance and keeps everyone ok with everything. You may not think the same way, but that is just my opinion.

Oh goodness no. Religions do a lot of good in the world. There are organizations that help people in every corner of this planet on a daily basis. Educating, feeding, and healing. You just don't hear about these good deeds from the media. It goes against their agenda.

I think so, but government also needs to be updated and brought into the 21st century. British parliament was introduced in the 1100s and they still do business the same way that they did then. The US government was developed in the 18th century and nothing has changed since. It's time to adapt.

I've read the other answers and I think what you're saying is if we were all of one mind and didn't engage in the "my God is better than your God" attitude, would humanity be better off. Humanity is maybe the wrong word, let's call it mankind instead. Mankind will find a way to disagree, to usurp others to bully to steal, to murder - it's what we do. Humanity is what stops most of us from doing those things. Humanity is who most of us are...those who are terrorists and who want to bully us into their way of thinking are all about control of mankind. The meek shall inherit the earth? Nope, the meek at some time have to stand up for themselves and say no more! Beware, however, the George Bushes of our world whom we have chosen to lead us as he leads, not by terror per se but by bullying and sees himself as the supreme leader. Whilst telling us he doesn't dislike Islam...blah, blah, blah..

if religion would be substitued with a universal ethic organization, or a science (Sociology -- Comte), then yes. Otherwise, it would just lead to Anomie...
