Santa Clara County is best known for Silicon Valley regardless of the industry's economic status. It is also known for it's LA style of traffic. Right now being the buyers market and with foreclosures that are abundant due to the dot com bust, real estate might be somewhat attractive.

Winchester Mystery House is a must, Six Flag Great America is great for families. Sleep Train Ampitheater is good for music. Lots of nightclubs and bars are abundant as well as shopping malls. Santa Cruz (depending on time of day, day of week) is approximately 1 hour. The boardwalk and fishing in Santa Cruz is always a great plan for a day.

The place to ask more questions is the San Jose & Santa Clara Valley's Visitors & Convention Bureau and the respective Chambers of Commerces

Up until World War II it was mostly orchards with a few small towns. Then it turned in to Silicon Valley and became tech central.
Housing is extremely expensive. (A million dollars can buy you a small suburban tract home in an area with decent schools.)
It feels much more like L.A. than San Francisco. The entire county has been built out for cars. When BART was started the county opted to build 'expressways'. Now these are clogged and they are trying to build BART in the county.
In the valley housing is moderately dense single family housing.
There are a huge number of jobs in the county. However, most of the jobs are centered in the north of the county (from Palo Alto to North San Jose), while the population growth is happening primarily in south San Jose. This leads to a very heavy south to north commute traffic.
County seat is San Jose, the 10th largest city in the US.
The weather is hotter than San Francisco or San Mateo county, though not nearly as extreme as the central valley or Sacramento.
Gilroy in the southern part of the county bills itself as the Garlic capital.

The Santa Clara Valley used to be known as "the Valley of Heart's Delight," because its superb soil and climate made it a great place for agriculture - it was famous in particular for its fruit orchards.

There still were a few of these left when I was a boy there in the 1970s.
