I thought it was a much better read than the movie.

Not really. I mean, it's OK, but it's not nearly his best work. Do yourself a favor: rent the movie Congo, which is based on the book and ain't half bad, because it has some beautiful jungle cinematography and also some great gorillas-going-wild scenes. And then, read another one of Chricton's better efforts, like 'Jurassic Park,' or the 'Andromeda Strain' (his first big hit) or 'Timeline'.

If you like Michael Crichton's books, "Congo" was pretty good.

Sadly, the movie was so bad I walked out.

I'd rather read The Andromeda Strain, Jurassic Park, Timeline or State of Fear

I put it down...Are you looking for a good Chrichton book? His older stuff (The Andromeda Strain, Terminal Man) were awesome, but may seem a bit dated by today's standards
