Richmond, Virginia was the capitol of the Confederate States of America (CSA) during the Civil War. A lot of people don't realize that Richmond is within 50 miles of Washington D.C., which was, of course, the Union capitol.
Many civil war historians feel that the North's inability to capture Richmond early in the war was a major blunder that could have saved hundreds of thousands of lives.
