I use many different herbs and one of them is concentrated grape seed oil. Tastes like sh-- (very bitter)so mix it with juice or something. it is very concentrated use only 3-5 drops a day from an eye dropper. It was successful in lowering mine. never discount the power of mother nature. I also use Stevia instead of a sugar. Look it up on the web.

Read labels on food products and eat foods with LOW or NO cholesterol. No fried foods, fatty foods, red meats. Exercise, especially walking is good. Sometimes cholesterol problems are hereditary...so if he has done all of the above things and it's still high, then he may need to go on a prescription to lower it.

What has helped me is taking cod liver oil every day. Very little hard fat like butter and red fatty meat , switch to oils for cooking instead. Soy products is also good. And lots of vegetables and fruit. Fish is fine, any kind. The thing about not eating shrimps and tuna is old knowledge - it's got nothing to do with high cholesterol. Actually fat fish is best, such as mackerel, salmon, herring etc. Eggs is also fine.

High Cholesterol does not just come from what you eat etc. But can be an inherited trait. The best thing he can do is cut down on fatty, fried foods. Eat more fish and chicken and less beef. And exercise.

Eat high a high fiber diet...metamucil, beans , fruit and veggies. Don't eat meat or dairy products ...just fish and seafood . Don't smoke. Keep your saturated fats low. Don';t eat at McDonald's or other fast food places.
My dad is a doctor and diet is the first attempt and you have to be serious for 3-6 months...then retest...then if you really did eat properly and your chole. is still high...that is when you take the statins (chole lowering drugs). You don't want to take them unnecessarily because of side effects.
More info:
Oatmeal , beans, fruits and vegetable
Try these suggestions for lowering cholesterol, without sacrificing taste
Eat a fibre-rich breakfast such as oatmeal, wholegrain muffins and/or fruit. Read cereal box nutrition labels to choose one with five grams or more of fibre per serving. Oat bran and rice bran are the most effective.
Switch to whole grains. Choose wholegrain breads, crackers, bagels, muffins, waffles and pancakes.
Eat legumes (beans) at least three times a week. Try bean soup, cold bean salad, hoummos sandwiches and black bean dip as snacks. Soy protein is especially effective, so be sure to include plenty. Even soya milk, tofu and textured soy protein are good.
Eat five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. One at breakfast, one veggie (e.g. carrot sticks, tomato slices) and one fruit (e.g. orange sections, apple) at lunch, and one salad and one cooked vegetable at dinner...that makes an easy five.
Choose whole fruit, skin included, instead of juice. Juice is the fruit with all the fibre removed.
Eat garlic. Cooked or raw garlic both contain compounds that help lower your liver's production of cholesterol.
Other good foods include raw onion, salmon, olive oil, almonds, walnuts and avocados (the latter five are all high in fat, but most of it is monounsaturated fat which helps to improve cholesterol).
Eat plenty of foods that contain the natural antioxidants: vitamins C and E: Rich in Vitamin C Rich in Vitamin ERed and green peppers Cantaloupe Sunflower seeds WalnutsStrawberries Papaya Almonds PeanutsOranges Grapefruit juice Wheatgerm SoybeansBroccoli Brussel sprouts Wheatgerm oil Soybean oil
Studies show that a little bit of wine or beer helps cholesterol levels. Binge drinking is not effective, but light to moderate drinking through the week is.

Since heart disease runs in his family he needs to take this seriously. After diet, exercise, and losing weight (if he is overweight) come medications. Large doses of niacin are a possibility as are the statin drugs, which seem to have other health benefits such as a reduction in Alzheimer's disease among people who take them.
He need to get beyond his reluctance to take things that are not "natural"
