Call you local branch and ask. The one near me is volunteer except for Veterinary Technicians, Veterinarians, and a few of the volunteer coordinators. Those jobs are few and far between though.

It depends on the size and financial resources of the organisation. The San Francisco SPCA has tons of paid employees. Ones that do the final adoptions (counselors are volunteer), people that answer emergency phones for abused or distressed animals, certified veterinary technicians, dog and cat behaviorists who are paid and supervise the volunteers, people who clean the dog and cat holding cages or pens and do the daily feedings. etc.
None of the jobs are highly paid however and you can find a job. Just call and ask your local facilities even if you can only get on a waiting list for employment. Sometimes volunteering can lead into a job.

YES. you can get paid. depending on where you work - every city is different, I worked for an SPCA in ALberta Canada for several years in a paid position plus I did extra volunteer work too....
you wont get rich working for the SPCA but its a labor of love and dedication...
probably any HR positions would be volunteer positions on the Board of Directors but you can call your local SPCA to ask because really we dont even know what country you are in so how can we answer specific questions about pay etc....
I will say this if you love animals you wouldnt EVER work at a pet store - they exploit animals for profit, they care more about money than about animals

There are, but they are extremely difficult to come by. Those types of jobs just don't open up very often as most people in this profession are not there for the money. Which makes them very loyal employees who stay on for the duration of their careers. You would have a better chance getting a job at a city "pound".
Another option would be to manage a veterinary clinic or hospital. I also know that PETA has paying jobs as well, you may want to look into that.
And of course another option would be to open up your own shelter. Not very lucrative, but nothing in the animal rescue business is.

I recommend you look in the phone book, and call them. They can answer your questions. I know here in Albuquerque, the people who run the gift shop are volunteers. Another place you could consider looking into is the pound or a no-kill shelter.
Best wishes.
