if you are referring to ancient caste systems like the ones they had in ancient Rome, they imposed order upon the people. upper class (patrician) people were only natural born roman citizens. they were allowed to be rulers and/or serve in the senate. the middle class (plebeian) was freedmen. you could work your way from super poor or slavery to the middle class, but you couldn't ever be upper class. a middle class person could not marry an upper class person either. what this did was controlled who ruled Rome. it was meant to keep foreigners and lower class people from becoming a ruler.

the interesting thing is, a member of the middle class could have more money than an upper class member, but it still did not change their class status; however, a lower class person could always work their way to middle class.

There is no ability to move up in class or job status, so wherever you are born, you will have to have that job forever.
