Full Moon: earth is roughly between sun and moon
New moon: moon is roughly between earth and sun

I say roughly because if they were exactly in line (syzygy) then there would be an eclipse (lunar in the first case and solar in the second)

a full moon the three are lined up like this sun earth moon thus the moons full surface reflects.

new moon, i.e. no moon visible it is between the sun and earth.
