Donna was her name. Donna Beatrix Potter. She was a cute red-head with a tongue as sharp as her father's surgical knives. She could cut you and bleed you with one cross look. The reader must know that asking her to the school dance unnerved me like a Frobozz Magic De-Nervulator. But I had to. That chantilly lace, pretty face, can of mace, and unwavering pace took me to a magical place, one that warmed my heart and chilled my bones. I remember just standing there in front of her. She was talking to her friend, and the first thing I heard ("I can understand that") was also the last thing her friend said before spotting me. "Uh-oh," she said. "Here comes the Buddy Holly look alike!" I just stood there, the bright beams of her eyes paralyzing me while she enjoyed watching me flounder for words.
"Yes?" she said.
"I, uh, I, you know...." I stalled, "I want to take you to the school dance with me?"
She just stood there, blank expression. Cold expression. Her friend giggled. She was loving this. Those next few seconds felt like a thousand painful years.
Finally: "Ok. It's Friday, right? That'll be the day after I get my license." She turned and walked away silently.
Her friend stopped giggling.

It had been ten years since the day the music died. At the school dance was a Buddy Holly look alike as well as a Big Bopper and Richie Valens look alike. The kids were not all that familiar with their music and I can understand that. Well, the "Big Bopper" started the show singing Chantilly lace, pretty face, a ponytail hanging down. He was followed by "Ritchie Valens" who sang Ritchie's greatest hit about his former girlfriend. The song Donna had these lyrics...I had a girl...Donna was her name.
Needless to say, all the kids was hopping and bopping and having a great time when the last of the look alikes started singing Buddy Holly's "That'll be the day."

We know we dress like Buddy Holly and dance like fools at the cool schools, I can understand that Chantilly Lace does have a pretty face but, that'll be the day when a girl I fell in love with, stole the show, Donna was her name.

My date to the new school year's dance was a Buddy Holly look alike. I can understand that he might not be the brightest kid on the block, but he sure can dance. There was a girl in line in front of us. Donna was her name. It looked like she didn't have a date. Anyway, the first song of the night was 'Chantilly Lace, Pretty Face'. Billy told me it reminded him of me. HA! that'll be the day.

My school dance was just around the corner, but I wasnt that keen on it - this year the theme was fancy dress, I spoke to my Mum about it and voiced my concerns, "I can understand that" she said to me, "when I met your dad he was there with someone else - same theme - he was a Buddy Hollly look alike - and well - his date was awful - Donna was her name, I remember her face well and whilst they were bopping to the sounds of chantilly lace and a pretty face she was glaring at me as if to say hes mine and mine forever and even back then I thought to myself - "that'll be the day"
