Latitude is the horizontal lines going around the
earth every 15 degrees.
Longitude is the vertical lines going around the earth every 15 degrees.
There are 24 of each as in time zones-totaling
360 degrees. i.e. (a circle)
The day starts at the International Date Line.
The Prime Meridian runs approximately through
London, England. (Greenwich Mean Time)
If it is noon on the East coast, it will be 9.am.
on the West coast, because of the 90 degree difference. You can find any city by giving its Latitude and Longitude. If a person is lost, you use a GPS (global positioning satellite) moniter to find them.

Latitude lines are parallel to the equator-east to west. I always think of " lateral" lines which come from the sides. Longitude lines are those which meet at the poles go north to south. This is easy to remember if you think of the word "long" which is found in the word longitude.
