I wanted a phone that did all this but have found the fees cost prohibitive. I really don't need it to do much, but I want it to be able to sync so I don't have to do a lot of work. It would be great if I could put some software on it for reference or reading, but not to work with. I am SO clueless about this type of thing. Any ideas?

If you want it to sync with Outlook, then your main choices for operating system are Palm and Windows PocketPC.

If you want cheap, then the Palm Z22 is a decent PDA. It's $91 on Amazon.com.

It's got limited screen resolution, but for a calendar, address book, notebook, and reader, it works fine.

If you're willing to spend a little more, then check out Palm's other PDAs, along with HP's iPaq PocketPCs.

Outlook today is simply a "view" of Outlook, e.g. a way the data is presented to you. All you need is a system that syncs Outlook email, tasks, appoinments and contacts.

The cheapest Palm should be able to do that. You could use a Pocket PC, but they're a bit more expensive. However, you'll have a bit more features such as editing Word and Excel documents, and you'll normally have a colour screen (which, after a while, you can't go on without it...!).

A vhep phone that does all that would be the Treo 600... It is not sold by the manufacturer anymore nor by any service provider... You can get it on ebay for about $150 ...

Otherwise any color Palm handheld would do... try to check the palm.com or ebay.com for lower priced items...
