Most rack and pinion steering these days have a inner tie rod socket and ball then threaded rod the outter tie rod end threads on to with a jamb nut. Both different and inner is harder to replace do so with the rack boot. Please have the car realigned after tie rods are worked on.

On front wheel drive and some rear wheel drive cars with rack and pinion steering, inner tie rods are a ball socket with a threaded rod that is attached to the rack asm. .Outer tie rods tread onto the inner(threaded end of inner) and is attached to the steering knuckle by the wheel. On some rear wheel drive without rack and pinion the outer is still the same, and the inner could look almost the same, but is attached to steering linkage instead.Hope this helps.
