rational number can be divided by another number (4, 16)

irrational's only factors are 1 and itself (2,3,5)

a rational nbr can be expressed as a fraction. irrational cannot. e.g. 1/3, 3/5 etc are rational. pi is not. any infinitely repeating decimal can be shown to be rational and any fraction can be expressed as an infinitely repeating decimal. an irrational number will always have an infinite non-repeating decimal portion- such a sq root of 2 or pi.

a rational number is any number that can be written as a fraction, so 5, 9.2, 4.9385893485348735, -98.54, or 9.33333...

An irrational number is a number that can not be written as a fraction, such as pi (3.14159...) the square root of 11, etc...
