College is such a scam thats why its so expensive. In most progressive countries education is free. I have a degree and had to take a lot of expensive classes for **** i wont even remember. I guess you gotta do it though. I am so poor but i would be even poorer without the degree.

The first thing you have to know is that colleges set tuition in full knowledge that not everyone is going to pay full tuition. That is, many students who attend the school simply cannot afford the tuition. Those students pay a discounted amount: the tuition minus any financial aid or scholarships or loans that they take out.
Specifically, poorer students qualify for financial aid, which is basically where the school reduces the price to the level that is as expensive as possible for that student to still be able to afford it. Basically, the school looks at the student's family's income and reduces the amount accordingly. And the school does so on a student-by-student basis. Every student will pay a different tuition level this way, but that tuition level will be as much as that specific student can afford.
Remember, there are some students who come from wealthy enough families that they do not qualify for financial aid. Those students, and only those students, pay full tuition.
Regardless, many of those students likely are so wealthy that they could actually afford higher levels of tuition. Therefore, colleges have every incentive to jack up tuition to as high as they can.
For instance, say an elite college charges $40,000 per year for tuition. Every student that cannot afford that amount will pay up to the exact amount that they can afford (anywhere between $0 to full tuition, including various combinations of scholarships and loans, etc.) Regardless, every student that can afford that amount will pay $40,000. While $40,000 is a tremendous amount, it is still LESS than those students could actually afford. Therefore, as a student who cannot afford that tuition, I am perfectly happy with jacking up tuition to gouge those wealthy students. That will ultimately pay for better profs and provide more availability for scholarships for me (so I can take smaller loans.)

they have a high overhead, like paying for all the professors, and their land / building payments. Plus they stash tons of money in endowments, save it for grants to researchers, etc.
Also, the financial barrier kind of serves to keep people away who aren't completely dedicated. It's not fair, because then the poor people have to struggle more than the rich, but still it shows that you were dedicated enough to either pay the thousands of dollars, or hunt for scolarships or loans, and followed through with it. Just remember, once you're in, dont give up. each year you don't graduate is like forfeiting $40,000 or more in cash, because once you graduate usually you can get a pretty decent job, unless you major in something gay like art or photography.

Because colleges want more money to support the athletic departments. You should see what they pay football and basketball coaches. A lot more than the professors earn....
