Ok I know some people prefer to be called "african-american", but what about the people from Haiti and some people from Puerto Rico. They LOOK african-american but technically, they aren't.
I dont think we should call all people with black features african-american because we are ASSUMING they are all from Africa. Which do people prefer?

If you're not offending a black person, you're not trying.

Some like people or color, some like african american. The fact that the moniker changes every 20 years says a lot.

I don't call people African American, if they were born in the USA, I call them American or possibly black American.

If you want, you could use a label used in the UK - Afro-Caribbean. Just as misleading.

Do we need to categories people by their skin color? If a person needs to pick out a person in the crowd, what would they do if the crowd were all one shade (so to speak)? Point out features of their outfits. ^_^

Hope that helps. It is honestly the most efficient answer.
