Well, most people seem to think that Christianity is the source of peace... and yet, during the age of exploration, European Christians wiped out (mercilessly slaughtered) more than 95% of the Natives in the Americas in the name of Christianity. Not only that, but they pretty much destructed most of Africa/Asia/South America (in the name of spreading Christianity). The Spanish Inquisition? The Crusades? Hardly peaceful. I like how religions like to block out all the bad things that occured (and still occur) and put to light all the good things.
As for how one could be a peacemaker... Well, you have to look at it this way. There will never, ever be peace on earth because there is a constant clash of culture/civilization. People are ignorant and they have difficulty understanding that the world doesn't function the way they do. It's like how we (Americans) believe that suicide bombers are bad (which they are) but in those Middle Eastern nations, it's considered an honor. It's merely a case of upbringing. But, you can help *improve* this state. Ignorance is NOT bliss and to be a good peacemaker, you need to understand all sides of the conflict. From there, you have to know what both sides want and create a compromise. This is definitely easier said than done. Look at the Palestine/Israel conflict. All attempts have landed in disaster.
On a smaller note, it can still be difficult when dealing with feuding friends. Maybe smoothing out a misunderstanding would help, or perhaps creating compromise. It could be as easy as asking for forgiveness. You'll just have to play mediator in that case.

Paradox...fighting for a Peace gives nothing but war...making Peace is not possible...involved doing, action...and action imply reaction, one cannot exist without another, action/reaction two opposites creates conflict and conflict is not Peace at all...Action toward Peace may bring temporary relief at the beginning, but on a long run it will lead to new conflicts, speaking domestically, Globally and historically. Although there would be a solution...we do not know it yet...

the only practical plan i know of is the one outlined in some of my answers here at yahoo
there seems to be a block in people to facing the fact that the extreme injustice in pay is the cause of war
pay from $1 to $1 billion a fortnight - pay from 1000th to a million times the average hourly pay
justice is a christian virtue - the virtues are what causes happiness [peace, safety, fraternity, liberty, etc]
avarice is a vice because it causes misery - we have super hyper misery
the vices are the errors people make in pursuing happiness - they think the vices are good - they think avarice and injustice benefit them - they believe in them - wrongly
this error is very very deep in people - it is the constant leading error of all history - it is the lesson of history we have not learned - we refuse to examine our faith in avarice - and we go on growing in suffering
we all just go for getting as much as we can - we have made getting a lot into a virtue - it is a vice, it causes us selfdestruction - like children grabbing the whole birthday cake, and hence spending all our time grabbing and regrabbing and fighting for cake and destroying the cake
justice and non-avarice is going for getting out of society as much as we put in by our work - fairshares - but we are maddened by the sight of the cake, and we just try and grab it all - but so is everyone else - result, endless grabbing and regrabbing of cake, no eating of cake, no safety, peace
empires plunder, and then the plundered naturally attack the plunderer - endlessly - until the plunderer is exhausted, and the plunder is exhausted - as happened to every empire - the state built on injustice cannot stand - every empire has not stood
it doesnt matter how many times history teaches that plundering is not a happiness strategy, people keep trying to grab the whole cake - madness, obsession, avarice, misery, endless escalation of war and weaponry - and now suddenly we find our weapons are powerful enough to block out the sun from everywhere and kill all life - and we are still totally devoted to grabbing the whole cake, grabbing as much as we can, whether we contributed that much to the cake, or not
inheritance and lotteries are legal - both gain without work, both therefore theft, both therefore taking out more than we put in, ie, injustice, theft, - but still widely approved because people see the upside of inheritance and lotteries not the downside - and there are many wideopen legal thefts, also approved because people see the upside not the miserable and far greater downside of theft
see my other answers here at yahoo for further, if you want to be a real peacemaker

Peace is an internal state of mind. If we could all attain that then we would be at peace and would have no need for external directors.

Mediate, most conflicts arise from ignorance. Make people aware, and they will act peacefully. Anything beyond that is too much to explain.
