premature birth?

my sister-in-law just had her baby im not sure exactly how early it was but i know it was way too early the baby still has a heart beat i was just wondering if any one knew how early a baby can be born and survive or any good websites i could look at.......thanks

I work with premature babues, and they can survive as early as 23 weeks. At 24 weeks the survival rate is about 50%, at 28 weeks it jumps to over 90%. I believe the earliest that a baby has been born and survived is 21 weeks. That baby had many medical problems though. The chance of survival at 21 weeks is less than 1%.

There have been cases of babies (Not very many) surviving at 23 weeks. 24 weeks is usually the ealiest that one can be born, and MIGHT not have problems, but most will. My son was born at 29 weeks and was in Children's Hospital for 10 weeks and just turned 2 last month and it totally healthy with no delays.

22 weeks a baby can survive... but the chances are less than 10 percent and only about one percent chance that the baby wont have something developmentally wrong with it.

At 25 weeks, the chances become higher than 50% chance for survival... but even then, theres a good chance of developmental problems.

After 27 weeks, its a 90% chance of survival, with a much smaller chance of developmental problems.

I think they can survive at 6 months. I mean it really just depends on how developed the baby is. Especially there lungs..which typically don't fully develop until the last month.

I think 26 weeks is pretty much the standard for when a baby can survive.

my friend's wife had a baby at 6 months. He was so tiny. He was in hospital for about 2 months. he 's healthy and growing fast now.
