There are scorpions all over the world in different climates and habitats. In the US they are not just in the desert, though that is where they are most encountered. There are many different species of different sizes and colors. I used to live in Oregon and they had black wood scorpions in the wet forests and scorpions in the prairie side of the state. So they are not just in deserts. Also, there is only one potentially dangerous scorpion and that is the bark scorpion in the southwest. Even then, no one has been killed by the sting in decades.

They are located in the desert regions and weigh only a few ounces. I have had many as pets when I lived in NM.
