I'm unemployed and looking for a job again for the first time in 6 years. The job I have now never asked me if I had a criminal record so I got lucky I guess. I was convicted of recklessly endangering safety in '97 which is a felony.

It is the only thing on my criminal record and I haven't been in trouble since.

For misdemeanors I advise it depends on situation since not everyone checks those. For felonies, well the good news is its more simple (not easier) - most places will check at least for felonies even if they don't ask about it on the application. Don't lie on the application if they do ask, your best bet actually is to leave the question blank - best case scenario is they bring you in for interview and ask you why its blank, that is your opening. In any case make sure it comes up in the interview, that is your only chance to tell them what you need to. Work out a "story" of what happened, by story I don't mean anything untrue, I just mean make it short (3-4 short sentences) and make it sound as not-bad as you can. The last sentence is your positive ending. Like this - "Yes there is something I need to disclose to you, at one point a long time ago I was involved with some things I now regret. (sentence summarizing what happened) I am grateful that difficult time in my life has passed and that I had that chance to learn the valuable lessone of (fill in)." Then if they have questions answer them honestly, conservatively, thoughtfully - show them how much you've grown.

Will it hurt your chances - possibly and yes for some jobs more than others. Can you work with this situation - definitely yes. It is a challenge and gets better with practice. Practice this part of your interview with a friend many many times before you do it live!

Good luck

It will in some jobs, but not in others.

If you are physically fit and willing to work hard, you should be able to get a job in the construction industry.

Stop by all the local union halls, and sign up for work. Many of them have on the job training; you pay a $10.00 fee to get on the list.

This is the best time of year to start out, if you are in any part of the country that has cold winters. Most companies are in a hurry to finish up all the work they lined up for the summer... before the cold weather hits.

P.S. Try the Roofers Union first.

It will only matter if you are asked or it requires a background check. Most places offer a place to explain even if the answer is yes. Whatever you do DON"T LIE about it. If you do you could compromise your job if they find out you lied on an application and hurt your chances in the future. But if they don't ask don't volunteer the information either.

Was that a motor vehicle violation? It's from so long ago that you probably won't have a problem depending on whether they are checking 7 years or 10. You do have to disclose it though if they ask. Not sure if you can get a copy of your own background check from a company like Choicepoint so you can see what they will get if they run one on you.

I, as a convicted felon myself, have got here across the biggest ingredient is telling the fact approximately your previous, and your ability to coach that that is purely that. Your previous. in case you had a drug concern, be waiting to coach a twelve months's incredibly worth of unpolluted urinalisis assessments via your parole officer. He/she will gladly produce the outcomes for you upon request. character letters from people who knew you formerly and now, stapled on your application help. they actually do. Many employers purely want to be responsive to you are going to paintings difficult, and be on time daily, on time. And cause them to funds. they want to be responsive to what form of person you're, and not the way you have been. Honesty IS the superb coverage. as quickly as I first have been given out of penal complex, no one needed to chat to me. I had 12 years interior the Marine Corps, and a level in engineering, yet i grew to become into flipping burgers at McDonald's for purely approximately a twelve months, formerly I went to an interview the place I now paintings. i grew to become into discouraged by way of fact the achievements I made in life did no longer look to rely, yet I crammed out the ap. thinking this may well be a sturdy job. i'm ill of being shown the door, yet this job is sturdy adequate to go through the embarrassment as quickly as extra. perchance i gets fortunate. HONESTY have been given me the job. the guy advised me if i'd desire to bypass a drug demonstrate screen, he'd provide me a 2nd probability. I now make 65k a twelve months on an assembly line for a important automobile producer and am interior the UAW. Persistance, and taking delight in your self, and the transformations you made on your life, and honesty approximately your previous, are all necessary. you will discover diverse people who choose no longer something to do with you. wager what. you go with no longer something to do with them the two. shop your head up, and shop plugging. you acquire no decision. And remember. do no longer sweat the small issues. and that they are ALL SMALL issues.

I used to work for International Paper, and their policy was to not hire anyone with a felony on their record.
