My boyfriend's parents are both biologists and 1/4 of the students at my school are biologists.

They chose the field because they were fascinated by nature and the creatures in it. Biology ranges from studying animals and plants to finding the latest cures for diseases. Lab biologists (research scientists who sit in a lab and do research) are quite different than field biologists (either those are physicians or those who research animals and plants in their natural habitat).

A BS (bachelors of science) degree takes 4 years to complete in the US (slightly more of less in other parts of the world). After that you decide to become a physician or a researcher. Physicians go to medical school for 4 years (in the US) and then have a residency that varies with the specialty. High school teachers will get a Masters in Education which takes from 1-2 years and then go into teaching. Lab rats (low level researchers) can normally get some jobs with just a bachelors, but ofter get a higher degree. Other researchers, of any specialty, normally need a Ph.D. and become college professors to pay for their research. There are two routes to getting a Ph.D., going right for it (at least 5 years) or getting your Master's first (2 years before your 5 years). Some insane (my opinion) people get a joint MD/Ph.D. and will be in school for at least 9 years. Talking to an academic adviser will help you find the right path.

Biologists tend to have to take 3-4 math courses in high school and statistics and calculus (sometimes more than one calc and stat class) in college. They also have to take physics, which is just math with a purpose (again, my opinion).

All the biologists that survived their first year at college love it. I wish I could explain to you why, but I don't get it. All I know is that they are really excited with what they do and love it.

Good Luck!

I am not a biologist, but it is really irritating to click on the work Help!!! and not even know what the question is. It just wastes my time.
